In 2000, my research group and I at University of Rome founded avatar, a journal about art, communication and anthropology. During the first 2 years, avatar organized a series of art exhibitions and experimental performances in Naples and Rome to discuss the themes behind the magazine (featuring artists like Orlan).
The idea behind avatar is that we have to use a wide range of media (from video, to interactivity, to performance) and not just the writing to conduct a more precise anthropological research. avatar emphasizes the power of syncretism and individual communication, among radically different cultures and media.
avatar was published by Meltemi and distributed across Europe.
